Bring the family, bring your trail buddies, and give everybody a little room to unwind. Our Starlight Retreat in Shingleton is a four-bedroom, two-bath home for up to 12 guests, about 10 miles east of Munising. Spend your days exploring Pictured Rocks and your evenings in a place with wood-paneled gathering rooms, colorful quilts, and the easygoing feel of a U.P. getaway.
Two living rooms make traveling together pleasantly flexible: settle in for a movie, claim a quieter corner, or spread out while dinner comes together. The kitchen has cookware, dishes, and the everyday appliances for meals at home, with a separate dining room for gathering around the table. There's also a propane grill when the menu calls for something with grill marks. Whoever volunteers to cook gets first refusal on dish duty.
Outside, a grassy yard, picnic table, and chairs around the fire ring invite you to make an evening of staying put. For snowmobile and ATV trips, access to Trail 8 right from the house is a big part of the appeal. Keypad entry keeps arrival straightforward. Send us an inquiry to plan your dates and ask how the house will work for your crew.
The sleeping arrangements give families and friends several ways to settle in. The primary bedroom has an adjustable queen bed and its own full bathroom; another queen bedroom brings classic cabin character with a log bed and patchwork bedding. A California king fills the third bedroom, and two twin beds share the fourth. Sofa beds in the two living rooms provide additional sleeping space, bringing the total capacity to 12. The second full bathroom includes double sinks and a tub/shower combination.
A rocking chair gives the second sitting room an easygoing perch, while a kitchen table provides another place to sit apart from the dining room. You can unpack groceries, set up a laptop at the dedicated workspace, and keep the day's gear moving through the laundry without living out of a suitcase. Wi-Fi, televisions, and an indoor fireplace round out the comforts. Please plan for a home without air conditioning; pets are not permitted.
Use Starlight as your base for Trail 8 riding days, then trade your helmet for a chair in the yard. Check trail openings and conditions when planning a snowmobile or ATV trip. Winter visitors should also check seasonal road closures before heading into Pictured Rocks.
For a shorter Pictured Rocks outing, visit the Miners Castle overlooks, where paved walks bring you to views of the sandstone formation and Lake Superior. Pair that stop with Miners Falls: the dirt-and-gravel trail is 1.2 miles round trip over gently rolling ground. There are 64 steps to the lower viewing platform, so choose the overlook that suits your group.
Want more time in the woods? From the Chapel/Mosquito trailhead at the end of Chapel Road, the Chapel Falls hike follows an old roadbed through maple forest for about 2.5 miles round trip. Continuing to Chapel Rock and Chapel Beach makes it a substantially longer outing, about 6.2 miles round trip. The primitive access road and limited parking call for a little advance planning; download the park's trail map and check conditions before setting out.
To see the cliffs from the water, arrange a Pictured Rocks Cruises trip from Munising City Dock. Seasonal narrated cruises generally run two to three hours, with different routes and departure times to choose from. Reserve separately and check the operator's schedule and weather updates. The Munising Falls trail is closed as of September 2026; check current National Park Service alerts before adding that stop to your plans.
