An original Alberta Village home! Imagine lodging in a historic home built as part of Henry Ford's demonstration sawmill town. In the 1930s Ford Motor Company was a major powerhouse in Michigan. Ford owned thousands of acres and several mill towns in Michigan's UP in support of his automobile manufacturing operation. On one of his trips to check his holdings he stopped in this little valley for a picnic with some of his traveling companions. They all agreed it would be a nice spot for a village and later that year construction began! It was to be a demonstration village revolving around a state-of-the-art sawmill with houses and schools for the workers and their families. In August of 1938 three thousand visitors signed the guest log in the reception building! Alberta was unlike any other company town with 12 unique homes, garages, sidewalks and street lights.
Today the core village remains much the same as it was back then, but thanks to Ford generously gifting the village to Michigan Tech in 1954 it serves a new purpose. The Ford Center and Forest is a field station for the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science. Students live here while taking classes, researchers work here on the more than thirty-five hundred surrounding acres. Residents occupy many of the original houses but a few are held for short term rental giving you the opportunity to stay in this historic village!
A perfect retreat for small reunions, family, friends, adventure vacations, history buffs, and special occasions. Whether it's a professional conclave or a family getaway, we're ready to help you plan your Ford Center event.
Unique Features
The homes are authentic originals built by Ford in the mid 30s. Although updated with modern conveniences each is much the way Henry Ford would remember it if he were to appear today. Each house is fully furnished and the kitchen comes with a stove, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, pots and pans, utensils, and plates, bowls and cups. There is a living room with Roku TV, and a dining room. The large basement has free laundry facilities. WIFI is available throughout as well.
Ash House features 7 bedrooms. Two on the main floor each with two twin beds that can be configured as one king bed with notice. There are three more bedrooms in the finished basement each with two twin beds. Upstairs you'll find two more bedrooms one has a single twin bed, the other with two twin beds.
There are two bathrooms. One on the main floor with a tub shower combo and a second in the finished basement with two shower stalls.
All guests are welcome to enjoy the recreation hall, canoes and sauna.
Things To Do
Take advantage of our location midway between Houghton and Marquette and 10 miles from the shores of Lake Superior and Keweenaw Bay in L'Anse. Alberta is a great base within an easy day trip of Copper Harbor, the Porcupine Mountains, even Pictured Rocks.
For days spent closer to home guests can enjoy 3,700 acres of diverse hardwood, jack pine, and forested wetlands owned by MTU. Canyon Falls is right here on the property! Just beyond our borders lies Point Abbaye, Little Mountain, Silver Mountain and the highest point in the state of Michigan Mount Arvon! The Sturgeon River Gorge offers another falls, Bears Den Overlook, and a wilderness area. The Baraga Plains are a vast expanse of managed and unmanaged acreage to explore on many two tracks and trails as well. The famous North Country Trail traverses the property as well.
Nearby activities can include fishing in anything from small streams and pothole lakes to rivers and Lake Superior. Lake Plumbago is stocked with trout and right across the street! The same goes for canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboards. The Baraga Plains offer opportunities for gravel biking or trail bikes with proper credentials as well.
You can also immerse yourself in Ford Motor Company and Michigan Tech history right here. Stroll the village, admire the old sawmill, visit the Baraga County Historical Society's display in the original pumphouse or Nature's Way Woodworking and Gift Shop located in the main office building.
In the winter a new world opens up. We have a 10K cross country ski trail right here on the property. There are several downhill and cross country ski venues in the region as well. There is also easy access to snowmobile trail 8 that connects to the extensive network of Upper Peninsula winter trails. And of course fishing season doesn't have to end just because things freeze up. Some would say that's a better time to go fishing!

Reviews
It was great to meet you this past week and spend time at the Ford Center. The visit to the Gift Shop was a highlight that everyone truly enjoyed, especially the time spent with Dave.
The house and surroundings were absolutely perfect for our needs. Everyone was very pleased and impressed. Several of our group said they would like to come back in the future, so that says a lot. Thanks again!
Michigan Technological University owns the Village of Alberta. The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science runs the Ford Center and Forest. The staff here on the ground is always working to accommodate all our user groups so that everyone has a memorable and enjoyable experience. Nothing makes us happier than having our guests say "we'll be back!".
