it's cabin time™ in Presque Isle
Presque Isle MI vacation rentals and cabin resorts on Grand Lake offer a unique northern Michigan vacation experience. Presque Isle is truly a vacationer’s paradise. There’s the shipping history, strikingly beautiful shoreline, parks and festivals. There is an abundance of walking and biking trails, some of the more popular ones are the Anishinaabe Trail and the Besser Natural Area. Area parks are in abundance too with the Thompson Harbor State Park, The new Presque Isle Lighthouse Park, and more. Festivals can include the famous Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, the Nautical Festival, Alpena County Fair, Presque Isle County Fair, Posen Potato festival, and the Great Lakes Lighthouse festival.
Presque Isle has been a busy shipping lane for decades. Thunder Bay’s high visibility also makes this a fantastic diving area for avid shipwreck divers. Back in the 1850’s, the ships had a lot of stress on them to meet unrealistic time restraints. The need for speed led to many shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, 9 of them right under Presque Isles nose in Thunder Bay. The Norman provided a unique diving experience and it is perhaps one of the best diving sites due to the fact that it is all intact that give divers a glimpse of the steam room and other great areas. The Cornelia Schooner is also a great diving mystery. While still upright, she is mainly intact as well and divers can only guess how the incident happened. Observe the only fresh water marine sanctuary in a canoe or kayak.
Wildlife is abundant in Presque Isle. Bears, dear, waterfowl, coyote, loons, and the bald eagle all call this area home. Presque Isle is also the only natural harbor on Lake Huron. Lake Esau is also in Presque Isle and a shining gem too. This 750 acre lake is open to all sports and best of all, light of all boat traffic (even though boats are allowed on the lakes). The sandy bottom is also clean of all weeds and much that can sometimes be on the bottom, giving way to high visibility and crystal clear waters. The depth is also gradual and great for children.
Onaway State Park is a rugged landscape and features Black Lake with a beach made up of sand cobblestone. The views from the shore are beautiful from the colors in spring and fall and the rock formation cut outs jutting out. This park is just 10 miles away from the Ocqueoc Falls, the largest in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It also features a 3 mile trail great for recreational use. Rockport State Park provides unique opportunities to the area and even the country. Rockport offers a chance to go fossil hunting. No, we aren’t making this up. Before the glacial period, Michigan was actually a saltwater sea full of ancient animals, corals, sponges, crinoids and more. The ancient rock quarries and sinkholes dating all the way back to the Devonian age offer distinctive rocks and fossils from the dinosaur period. There is even a dinosaur garden to see all the prehistoric creatures. This activity is great for families or historians. The low light pollution creates an aura of mystical stars and endless dark nights with the cosmos shining bright. Rockport State Park provides the darkest skies of all of the Great Lakes.
Nearby Roger’s City is the Nautical City of the Great Lakes and hosts two Salmon fishing tournaments a year. It is also home to the world’s largest limestone pit that attracts boaters from all over the Great Lakes.
While there are 7 magnificent lighthouses that dot along the shoreline, your Presque Isle vacation rental is near the oldest and tallest lighthouse on the Great Lakes. This tourist hot spot is for those that want to learn more about the Maritime History. Have you heard of the Haunted Light? There are also rumors of a ghostly past in the lighthouse that is worth checking out. (Don’t worry, the ghost is friendly).
Cabins in Presque Isle are in the Discovery Zone for fossils, shipwrecks, lighthouses, waterfalls, art museums, wineries on the US 23 Huron Shore Heritage Route, and the Sunrise Coast.
