Summer fun -
Pick a cruise or try several! Pictured Rocks cruises offer day, sunset & sometimes evening cruises for an unforgettable tour of the Pictured Rocks. Glass Bottomed Boat tours show you dozens of shipwrecks in our bay from the past 150 years. Grand Island Tours offer cruises to the largest island on the US side of Lake Superior, with trails to hike, bike and explore the island's waterfalls and breathtaking views from cliffs. If you're feeling rowdy treat the kids to the Pirate Ship cruise! Swabbing the decks, firing cannons and finding sunken treasure is all in a day's work!
Hugging the south shore of Lake Superior is the multicolored Pictured Rocks! The only National Lakeshore, you can visit a variety of beaches, some sandy, some with rocks, some with breathtaking cliffs. There are other beaches we can guide you to as well, including Sand Point beach in town and lovely stretches of beach just west of town.
Waterfalls are everywhere! A few are in town and others are a very short drive. You may see a few from the road, others are a short, easy walk from the parking areas. Each has its own sound and beauty.
Add to or start your collection of lighthouse photographs. Some can be climbed and all are historic. Check out the Maritime Museum at Whitefish Point, scene of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Oswald's Bear Ranch is a rescue started many years ago when the owner found himself caring for an injured bear. Worth the 40 minute drive to see bears of all ages who cannot be returned to the wild being given a safe home.
If you need some speed, then rent a jet ski and enjoy nearby Pete’s Lake, a large all-recreational lake, 1/2 mi. away. Kayaking tours give you the adventure of a lifetime out on the Big Lake and up-close views of the Pictured Rocks. Charter a fishing trip on Lake Superior and experience fishing "the Big Lake". Check out the new trail that joins Munising from the west shore area, over hills and valleys to the area along Hwy 94 near Valley Spur.
Winter fun -
Bruno’s Rest offers a winter wonderland. Alger county is known as "the snowmobile capitol of the UP"! Ride from the cabin onto hundreds of miles of trails, well-groomed by Alger County SORVA. Cross country skiers will love the challenging McKeever Hills trail system just 1/4 mile down the road. For variety, Valley Spur and Munising ski trails are only 15 minutes away. Backcountry skiers and snowshoers can explore the area on seasonal roads and other trails. Many fat tire bike enthusiasts enjoy the rural roads as well.
Frozen waterfalls mean ice climbing! Take a lesson or enjoy watching the ice climbing festival in Feb. We are on the routes of 2 sled dog races. Watch them take off from their overnight stop or catch a view of them on the trail. You can't miss the Eben ice caves, unbelievable beauty!
Of course the winter brings ice fishing! Enjoy it on our lake at the cabin or try the many nearby lakes including on the bay in town.

I just spent time at this cottage for the second time, and I am never disappointed. The place is spotlessly clean, which is a priority for me. The owners Karen and Richard are easy to contact and they respond to emails right away (with no third party website involved!). The cottage sits on a small, scenic lake, making it feel like a quiet escape, yet Munising is only a 15 minute drive away. And this area of Michigan is God’s country when it comes to trails, lakes, and rivers within a few minutes of the cottage. Can’t wait to come back! Mike M
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely home with us. It was a perfect place for our adventures at Pictured Rocks and our search for other waterfalls. Even on our rainy day we enjoyed the view, darts, foosball, and playing euchre. We enjoyed a movie one night as well. Your place is so clean and well stocked for cooking. I have already recommended it to a friend! The brownies were wonderful and so appreciated! Again thank you for your hospitality! Nan Hansen
Our stay at Bruno’s Rest was perfect. The home was very clean and the lake and kayaks were fun. Everything was so peaceful and relaxing. Karen was a great host and kept in contact with me updating me on the current pandemic. She was so easy to talk with and answered any questions promptly. I enjoyed talking with her on the phone when we were planning our trip. She had brownies waiting for us upon our arrival and it was such a nice surprise. The brownies were yummy too. I would love to stay here again if in the area. My family and I would actually really like to relocate to the upper peninsula from Ohio. It was beautiful and we enjoyed every moment or our trip. Thanks again. Crystal
The lake is perfect. It is quiet, calm, and natural. The cottage is very clean, well decorated , and extremely comfortable. The cottage is exactly what a UP cottage should be like. The local store, and hiking trails are all within walking distance. The cottage is in the middle of nowhere (which is a good thing), but it is also within a short drive to Munising and Manistique. The UP is only about forty miles wide in this location. There are two good restaurants if you are interested. The Brownstone Restaurant is located about one mile west of Au Train. The Dock Restaurant is right on the shore of Lake Michigan, located in a small marina. The marina/restaurant is in the town of Garden near the Fayette Historic State Park. The owners of Brunosrest, Karen and Richard are excellent to work with. We will definitely return for another visit. And yes, I would and did recommend this cottage to my family and friends. We are a semi-retired couple who love living in this incredible place. We have enjoyed supporting our community through volunteering at the animal shelter, coaching at the high school and being volunteer firefighters. Now, we are happy to help you have a memorable vacation in our neck of the woods! We live by the cabin, so are just a call or text away if you need something or would like information to help you plan your UP activities.
