Relax and recharge at our 1500 sq. ft. Avery Lake cabin located in a private, wooded setting, on a small island with a drivable causeway and bridge. Two-thirds of lake is surrounded by state forest land. Welcome to The Elk Capital of Michigan.
Inside is beautiful knotty pine paneling complemented by a cathedral ceiling. Our dining table seats six comfortably.
Guests can use a 12 foot aluminum row boat, 5 kayaks, 1 canoe and a stand-up paddle board. Many guests like to bring an electric trolling motor for the row boat, which is perfect for fishing.
There are three large and comfortable bedrooms. The master bedroom is located on the second floor, has a queen size bed, and its own bathroom. On the main floor are two other bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with two twin beds. A second bathroom is located just across the hall from these two bedrooms. Each bedroom has access to an outdoor deck from which there are great views. Also, there is a deck off the living room and kitchen areas, and an additional deck near the door closest to the lake.
The house is on an island, one side of the island borders a wonderful natural wetland that provides habitat for birds, and wildlife. Summer nights are filled with the cacophony of sounds made by spring peepers and other resident frogs.
We have a nice fire pit located near the house and we provide firewood. Great place to spend evenings watching the stars and eating s'mores!!
Avery Lake is a truly unique place. It has water that is of the absolute highest quality. The lake is fed by numerous springs that flow down from the surrounding hills. We do our best to maintain the property in a natural condition and strive to preserve the wilderness quality of the area. The house is surrounded by both deciduous and pine trees, as well as by other natural vegetation.
Large windows in the living room allow for great views of the lake, and because the house faces west, the views of the sunsets over the forested hills are stunning. Likewise, the decks off the back of the house afford views of the natural wetlands that border our property and birders will appreciate the variety of species that can be seen there, especially in the mornings.
The house itself is located just steps away from the lake shore, making lake access very easy. Although the lake has a remote feeling to it, there are grocery stores, libraries, restaurants, etc. located in both of the towns of Atlanta and Lewiston, each about 9 miles away.
Our kitchen is fully equipped with everything you will need for meal preparation and enjoyment. We do ask that guests bring their own sheets and towels.
Additionally, we will send you a rental agreement and more information about the area.
We have a nice lakeside deck very close to the house. The deck is great for swimming activities, and the bottom of the lake close to the deck is sandy and shallow. . . great for small children. Further out, the bottom becomes a little softer, but there are nice submerged logs for swimmers to stand on. Paddle around the lake in the canoe, one of the kayaks, or, if you are adventurous, try out the stand-up paddle board. Look for deer, black bear, otters, beavers, elk, mink, and other furry creatures as you move silently in the water. Also, we usually have one or two nesting pairs of loons each year that make Avery Lake their summer home. Listen to their melodious calls in the early morning and in the evenings. Also we usually have Canadian geese and several species of ducks on our lake.
Fishing at Avery Lake can be truly exceptional. The high water quality provides a great habitat for small mouth bass, which is the predominant species. But we also have respectable numbers of large mouth bass and northern pike. Occasionally, anglers hook up with walleye as well. Fly fishing can be exceptional. We have a nice hex hatch in early June, and after that, the bass are tuned into anything that floats on the surface.
Since you book directly with me (Daniel), I can give you lots of tips on what to see and do: Thanks to plentiful state forest lands, there are numerous other lakes and small trout streams in the area. 25 miles to the south is the Au Sable River which flows through the Huron National Forest, which makes for an adventurous day trip.
Like to golf? Gaylord, the Golf Mecca of the Midwest is less than an hour drive. Also close by is the Garland Resort and Tree Tops, both providing an exceptional golfing experience.

An awesome place to visit for a fun relaxing family trip. We enjoyed kayaking and canoeing around the lake. Board and card games were available and the deck is very large to play and have breakfast/dinner on. House was very clean and kitchen had all the essentials. Would definitely visit again! Hasan D.
We loved our long weekend at this home. The property is well kept, clean and spacious. The owner was very quick to respond to any questions we had. We never left the property during our stay as we had everything we needed. There was a beautiful view of the lake from the living room windows! It was a bit too chilly to swim, but we took the rowboat out for a spin. What a beautiful, crystal clear lake! Even though the wind was whipping up a bit that weekend, we still caught a few nice fish. An extra treat was discovering a nifty assortment of games and puzzles in the bedroom closet, as well as vintage books throughout the house. Great stuff for rainy day/evening fun! We'd definitely consider renting this home again! Cindy B.

We (Daniel and Cheryl) have been coming to Avery Lake since the late 60s. The house has been in our family for over a generation. Our own children practically grew up here in the summers. But in all these years, the lake has really changed very little. We occasionally host guests who came here as children as long ago as the 1950s! They are amazed that the area has maintained the same remote feeling and that nature still abounds here.
Cheryl and I have been fortunate enough to travel and live all over the world, but we still regard Avery Lake as a very special place. We truly get so much gratification from guests that feel the same way we do!
